Aarhus Domkirke

A light installation that architecturally illuminates Aarhus’ iconic cathedral; Aarhus Domkirke. The lighting was designed to very carefully support the vastly varying structure and composition of the cathedral, in a downplayed scenario, as wished for by the ministry. The project was completed in december 2018.

The installation is based on 8 different placements of fixtures, which have been carefully designed to envelope the western and southern faces of the structure.
The fixtures are placed in various privately owned locations and are all connected via a wireless communication system, which can be remotely controlled. The light has been coloured at a very subtle level, to support the actual colours of the brick and copper roof of the cathedral.
Designed together with Kollision A/S in dialogue with the ministry.

Experience:
This project was more of an administrative affair for me, thankfully, as it was running alongside my efforts with Origin – a project that demanded as much focus as possible, from my side.
Highlighted circumstances, that I dealt with in this project:

  • Drafting and finalizing contracts with designers and contractors.
  • Securing approvals for placements of fixtures on private domain.
  • Drafting and implementing approved maintenance plan complicated slightly by the nature of placing equipment on private domain.
  • Developing and executing press package consisting of photography, descriptions, publication etc.

Uniquely, this project gave me an experience in working with sensitive structures, protected by several different authorities.
